Glasgow takes third on TripAdviser

23 May 2013

Glasgow has been named as the third best in the UK’s top ten destinations on TripAdvisor.

TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site, has announced the winners of its 2013 Travellers' Choice Destinations Awards, which honour the top destinations in the world as decided by millions of travellers. There was great news for Glasgow, which was named the UK's third best destination following behind London and Manchester which took first and second place respectively. Glasgow placed ahead of the likes of Liverpool, Bristol and Belfast in the list and jumped up two spots from last year's rankings. However, it wasn't all good news for Scotland as Edinburgh dropped out of the UK top 10 for the first time.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: "The fact that these awards are based on millions of reviews and opinions from TripAdvisor travellers, and therefore from those who have experienced the city first-hand, makes it a credible endorsement of the city.

"Glasgow has a cultural scene and retail sector that is the envy of destinations across the world. We have outstanding architecture, with the Art Nouveau magic of Charles Rennie Mackintosh prevalent throughout our city; our world-class museums and galleries are free, including the Riverside Transport Museum which was this week awarded the title of European Museum of the Year; and there are live performances, festivals and entertainment fifty-two weeks of the year. Furthermore, the city's hospitality scene is diverse, lively and welcoming; just like Glaswegians.

"I'm delighted TripAdvisor travellers recognise that Glasgow is a vibrant and dynamic city and I hope this latest endorsement will serve as inspiration for many more travellers when planning their next trip."

Angus Struthers from TripAdvisor said: These awards honour the world's best destinations as decided by those judges that really matter - travellers themselves. With the choice of so many beautiful destinations in the UK, it's fantastic that travellers have named Glasgow among the UK's very best."
