South Block has new tenants

06 Jan 2012

Two top creative firms have become the first to move into a new £3.5 million arts hub in a former warehouse.

Award-winning companies Screenmedia and Good are the first commercial tenants to take up residence in South Block in Merchant City.

The previously rundown Osborne Street warehouse, which overlooks King Street car park, has undergone a year-long revamp by arts charity Wasps - Workshop and Artists' Studio Provision Scotland.

Almost 65 individual workspaces have already been snapped up by jewellers and sculptors, and eventually the four-storey building will be home to 200 artists.

There are also 25 offices for bigger firms, with Screenmedia and Good the first to move in, while ten are under offer.

It is estimated the revamped building will provide a £69m economic boost for the city.

David Cook, chief executive of Wasps Studios, said: "The South Block regeneration is creating a vibrant new space for artists, creative businesses and social enterprises.

"I believe the project is a major success story for Glasgow and Scotland, allowing us to make the most of the country's immense creative and artistic talent."
