Discount designer chain TK Maxx today confirmed its new £30 million Glasgow store will be the biggest in Britain.

The shop, in Argyle Street, was originally expected to be 50,000 square feet in size.

But now bosses say the store will be up to 70,000 sq ft, making it the biggest outlet in the UK.

The shop is famous for selling designer clothes, shoes, handbags and homewares at bargain prices and is a favourite with fashion fans who spend hours rummaging through its rails on the hunt for the latest look.

During the four-floor store's transformation, around 160 temporary workers will be recruited sparking a mini-jobs boom at the site.

The £5m redevelopment contract has been awarded to Sisk Building Contractors, who will carry out the work at the corner site vacated by Tesco Metro.

The building's owners, MAR Properties, confirmed the shop will occupy the basement, ground, first and second floors. The third floor is expected to be let for office or leisure use along with a small ground floor retail unit on Miller Street.

Mark Rebbeck, the Northern Irish firm's commercial director, said total the investment was around £30m.

He said: "The building has had a number of different options over the years, but it's now around 70,000 square feet.

This exciting re-development of a landmark block in the city centre will add a new level of retail experience to Glasgow's prime retail core and confirms both MAR Properties and TK Maxx's confidence in Glasgow."

Donall McCann, of property agents BTWShiells, who brokered the deal said: "To secure the largest TK Maxx as the anchor to our exciting new development is a fantastic result for our client at a time when the retail market remains very tough."

Work has already started developing the site and the store is expected to be handed over to TK Maxx for shopfitting in June, with an opening scheduled before Christmas.

TK Maxx bosses were staying tight-lipped on further details about the store, including how many people it will employ.

But a spokeswoman said: "We continue to explore different retail sites across the UK and can confirm that Glasgow Argyle Street will be one of the largest stores to date, selling famous designer brands with savings of up to 60%.

"We are thrilled to be opening a second store in Glasgow city centre, it's going to be TK Maxx like you have never seen it before.

"We have a huge site to fill with amazing designer bargains."
