Secured by Design - designing out crime

The Secured by Design programme has had a major impact on crime, according to a recent evaluation carried out by Caledonian Environment Centre.

Over the period examined by the study, Total Housebreaking Crime decreased by 26% in the SBD‐Area while Attempted Housebreaking decreased by 59% and Theft by Housebreaking decreased by 18%. All three decreases proved to be statistically significant.

Secured by Design (SBD) is the police flagship project for house crime prevention, Secured by Design focuses on crime prevention at the design, layout and construction stages of homes and commercial premises and promotes the use of security standards for a wide range of applications and products. The Glasgow project involves door and window installation.

The evaluation project was jointly commission by Glasgow Housing Association, Strathclyde Police and the Association of Chief Police Officers Crime Prevention. The evaluation was also supported by the Scottish Government.
