Scotland's largest Sainsbury's

13 Aug 2009

Sainsbury's has announced that work has begun to build its largest store in Scotland. The new 70,000 sq ft store in Braehead Retail Park in Glasgow, which replaces the existing centre store, will create approximately 120 new jobs for the local community and free up a number of retail units.

Plans include a new roundabout at the main entrance to the car park at the west of the site and a second access to the car park. A proposed recycling centre at the north of the car park will also be built.

Refurbishment work is expected to take approximately 19 weeks to complete and the new store is due to open late November in time for Christmas trading.

Paul Miller, Sainsbury's National Development Surveyor for Scotland said, "The new store in Braehead will become our largest store in Scotland when it opens later this year.

We look forward to improving the shopping experience for our customers and providing jobs for the local community."

Sainsbury's recently announced the creation of 1,300 jobs in Scotland by summer 2010, joining the 6,000 colleagues currently working in its 38 stores. The new jobs are an integral part of Sainsbury's plans to increase its presence in Scotland and will provide a real boost to the Scottish economy.

The new jobs are a result of Sainsbury's recently announced expansion plans which aim to increase shop floor space by 15% by March 2011.  This growth represents approximately 2.5m extra square foot across the UK.

Over 1,500 different Scottish products are available in Sainsbury's stores, 380 of which have been launched in the last year. Sainsbury's is a huge supporter of Scottish products over £600m worth sold across the UK every year. The opening of these new stores will lead to even more opportunities for Scottish suppliers to have their products sold at Sainsbury's stores.

Sainsbury's is the retail partner for the Scotland Food & Drink Initiative providing training and support for small Scottish suppliers. The Initiative aims to help suppliers grow their business by providing them with first hand experience of dealing with a major retailer.
