Glasgow has scooped two major convention industry awards - proving it is leading the rest of the UK.

Readers of a top industry magazine gave Glasgow City Marketing Bureau the Best UK Convention Bureau award - for the third year running.

It's the first time any Scottish city has won the award three times in a row.

In the year to March 2008, the convention bureau secured sales of £151million, up 3% on the previous year.

The figure is the equivalent of delegates spending 543,000 days in the city.

A top award from the Meetings+Incentive Travel trade magazine also went to the SECC, which was named Best UK Convention Centre for the second year running.

Molly Doheny, head of the Glasgow convention bureau, said: "This is another fantastic performance.

"Conferences are extremely important to the city, which is why we take a Team Glasgow' approach of working in close partnership with the private sector to win these meetings and give them such good service they want to return.

"This award is not just for the bureau, it is for everyone in the city who works so hard to make Glasgow such a fantastic conference destination."

Ben Goedegebuure, SECC director of sales, said: "We're delighted to be celebrating with the bureau. These awards underline the progress we're making together."

Everyone from astronauts to sleep experts have chosen the city for conferences, which have boosted Glasgow's economy by £26m in recent months.
