09 Aug 2009

Braehead is celebrating in style this weekend. Shoppers will be able to enjoy free perfomances from stars of X-Factor and Britain's Got Talent with Zapcat racing on the Clyde at Braehead on both days.

The celebrations run for the whole weekend of 12th to 13th September, marking the succcessful 10th anniversary of Braehead as one of Scotland's most popular shopping destinations.

Entry to watch the Zapcat racing - where boats can reach speeds of more than 50pmh - is also free, as is a whole host of other entertainment on the boardwalk and in the malls. Throughout the weekend, there will be a jazz band performing alongside walkabout comedy acts, children's entertainers and face painting.

The boardwalk that runs alongside the river will be the focus for the outdoor entertainment, with plenty of other events inside at the shops.

One of the highlights of the celebrations is on the Sunday when glamorous X-Factor girl band, Bad Lashes along with martial arts performers, Strike and dynamic dance duo, Signature from Britain's Got Talent perform for free.

Braehead's general manager, Peter Beagley said: "Everyone from kids, their mums and dads to grans and grandpas will have a fantastic time at Braehead that weekend. We're creating a street festival with the different kinds of entertainment going on in the centre and on the boardwalk along Clydeside.

"We're really excited to have finalists from two of the most popular television talent shows ever performing free for shoppers. And the thrilling Zapcat racing is a great way to help celebrate our tenth birthday.

"With all the other fun events going on at the same time it will make for a really exciting weekend for all the family."

The Zapcat racing will take place between noon and 5pm on both days with practice starting at 11am. Teams will complete over 16 heats each day to secure their place in their divisional finals.
Originating from surf rescue craft, Zapcats are lightweight, incredibly stable and agile crafts making the tightest of turns at incredible speeds.

Speaking on behalf of the Zapcat event, Rachel Cavers said:
"The Zapcat Racing Celtic Cup will be a really thrilling event, made even more exciting as the racing takes place in the midst of Braehead's tenth birthday party. The centre is planning a host of activities to entertain the crowds and the Zapcat racing will be fast and furious."
