Braehead is to add a hotel to its list of attractions in a bid to attract tourists as well as shoppers.

Plans for a 99-bedroom guesthouse, beside the Xscape leisure complex in Renfrew, look likely to be given the go-ahead this week.

The £90million indoor centre alone attracts more than three million visitors a year from all over Scotland, the north of England and Northern Ireland.

Developers hope the new hotel will also appeal to visitors attending events at Braehead Arena and tourists looking for a base with good motorway links.

Thousands of people regularly visit the venue for shows by stars such as Beyonce Knowles and Marilyn Manson.

Tulip Inn has a three-star hotel beside Xscape's centre in Castleford, Leeds, and it's likely the Braehead hotel will be run by an operator with similar affordable rates.

Backers are seeking permission for a four-storey L-shaped building on a site to the west of Xscape, off King's Inch Road.

Construction work has already started on phase one of a business park at the back of the leisure centre.

Plans before Renfrewshire Council show the new hotel will have a 101-capacity car park and will use the same access road as traffic heading for Xscape.

Original proposals to build a 175-bedroom hotel have been scaled back and planners are insisting the operator fully landscapes the site.

But the new plan has been recommended for approval and councillors are expected to back Braehead's latest expansion.

More than 2000 homes, a public park and leisure facilities have already been earmarked for 185 acres of waterfront land, which links the shopping complex to Renfrew town centre.

Meanwhile, the opening of a £5m Odeon complex at Xscape has been delayed for almost a year.

The 12-screen cinema was due to open last April but the plans were cancelled after a ceiling collapsed weeks before the launch.

No exact date has been set but the cinema is likely to open this summer.
