Clydebank College opens to the public

24 Sep 2007

Clydebank College opened its doors on Sunday 23rd September for its official Community Day Party and invited local residents to the Queens' Quay to help welcome Clydebank's new landmark campus for free.

Forty years ago the John Brown shipyards were the site for the construction of the QE2.  Now the area, which had been lying derelict, has been transformed into an attractive college campus, with adjacent business park accommodation.  With intensive building work taking place at Queen's Quay over the last year the £32 million Clydebank College has taken shape quickly.

Tours were provided throughout the day to show off the new college building. At one point there was such a huge demand that additional tours had to be booked in.

With entertainment gurus such as Clyde 1's road show and live bands wooing the crowds, the day was already set to be a massive success. There was something for everyone and with a Formula 1 challenge set to gruel even dedicated motor enthusiasts and a climbing wall to take participants to new heights - it was bound to get visitors adrenaline pumping! For those who preferred to observe and take in the atmosphere there was an extreme mountain bike display and an energetic set from the renowned Scottish Rockettes.  Arts and crafts were set up so visitors could wander and peruse the many stalls set up on the waterside walkway or even stop off and get a quick massage by local therapists. Last but not least sponsors such as Redbull, Tunnocks and Zumo were there with complimentary samples. Up and coming band 'Darkwater' also made a guest appearance and kept the crowds entertainment until the sun began to set.

Alan Forbes, New Build Events Coordinator said:

'We are really happy about what a great turn out we had for the day - we estimated that over 1,000 people attended. The weather held out so everyone got to enjoy the full extend of all the activities on offer. A great day was had by all and it is sure to pave the way for great things to come at Clydebank College.'
