BAE Systems recruit Clyde apprentices

23 Feb 2007

Glasgow, Scotland - BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions is set to expand what is already the largest modern apprentice scheme in Scotland, with the announcement that it will take on a further 120 people into its three-year programme to develop the skilled Clyde workforce of the future.

The 2007 programme will recruit the largest number of apprentices since the expansion of the award-winning modern apprenticeship scheme in 2003.

BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions already employs almost 4,000 people on the Clyde and this latest investment in the long-term future will reinforce the Clyde yards' position at the forefront of warship building not only in the UK but the world. The intake will raise the number of apprentices recruited onto the programme to almost 500 since 2003.

Vic Emery, managing director of BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions, said; "The Defence Industrial Strategy led by Defence Procurement Minister Lord Drayson helps give us the long-term clarity and planning assumptions we need to invest in sustaining the skilled workforce which will support the Royal Navy in the years to come.

"We are already at the forefront of warship design innovation, systems integration and through-life support, and we will continue to lead the way in the industry through the employment of the next generation of warship builders.

"Our apprenticeship scheme is not just about offering people a job, but a career for life."
