Wave of interest in WaterfrontExpo

15 Jun 2006

Plans to stage the world's largest international waterfront development conference in Glasgow are creating a wave of global interest.

Organisers of WaterfrontExpo 2006 are predicting it is set to be the biggest and best yet.

Mark Beaumont of Media Generation Events, said: "With five months to go until the conference takes place we expect to welcome record numbers of delegates to Glasgow. Bookings are already being made and that's never happened this early. We are also considering extending the exhibition space to meet demand from around the world."

The three day programme, running from 17-19 October at the city's SECC venue, will showcase 12 international waterfront development projects.

The event venue is at the heart of Scotland's largest ever renaissance programme, Clyde Waterfront, which will not only form an impressive backdrop to the conference but star as a showcase highlight.

The massive redevelopment programme underway in Scotland's capital city, Waterfront Edinburgh, will also be the focus of a conference presentation.

Exciting and innovative developments in Manchester, Chicago, Wellington, Lisbon, Saint-Petersburg, Orestad, HafenCity, Toronto, Oslo and Porto Cristovao, Brazil - the first South American city to participate - complete the line-up of showcase projects.

This year's conference provides a global platform for top line international business leaders to speak on key issues including Positioning Cities in a Competitive Global Marketplace, Funding & Infrastructure, Sustainable Waterfront Cities and Creating Liveable Waterfront Cities.

Focus sessions will debate and discuss among other topics the social aspects of waterfront development such as connecting with communities and an integrated approach to waterfront regeneration.

Complementing the conference programme the largest ever schedule of local tours and field events has been arranged.

These include a walking tour of Glasgow's architecturally magnificent city centre, also rated as one of Britain's leading retail centres and an increasingly popular visitor destination.

A boat trip on the River Clyde to view the changing skyline, a tour of the on-going £1.2 billion Glasgow Harbour development, a visit to the city's canal-side developments and an excursion to Renfrew Riverside's Xscape leisure complex are also on the delegates' agenda.

A new dimension has been added to this year's event with the development of a networking social programme including a Gala Reception in the stunning setting of Glasgow City Chambers and a whisky tasting at the famed floating entertainment venue The Ferry.

Away from the city delegates will be taken to some of Scotland's most scenic and popular visitor attractions.

Stirling with its historic castle standing at the centre of Brave Heart country and on to the rugged and natural beauty of the lochs and mountains of The Trossachs completes one trip, while the majestic setting of Loch Lomond offers another opportunity to see the scenic side of Scotland.

For those with an engineering interest the trip to The Falkirk Wheel will be an unforgettable experience. This giant structure is the world's first and only rotating boat lift and the centrepiece of the £84.5 million Millennium Link, itself the largest canal restoration project ever undertaken in the UK. The outing ends at Waterfront Edinburgh.

Mark Beaumont said: "We are delighted at the response we have had to Glasgow and Scotland as the location for this year's event.  There is no doubt the scale and excellence of the Clyde Waterfront project is exciting interest worldwide. Planners, architects, engineers, developers, financiers and others want to see what is going on and learn from the experience. Our extended programme also means that they will go home with a wider knowledge of Scotland and hopefully encourage others to come here to visit and take advantage of the exciting business opportunities that exist."

A wide range of exhibitors from the UK, Portugal, Russia, Latvia, Italy, Germany, South Africa have already confirmed their presence at WaterfrontExpo 2006.
