This problem solving lesson focuses on a yacht's safe departure
from the pontoon. Students are involved in learning about applied
physics in a practical situation on board a yacht, with the project
encompassing problem solving, logistical planning, communication
and safety awareness.
Exploring the boat manoeuvring will lead to an
understanding of forces, pivot points, fulcrums, levers and turning
circles, planning, cause and effect.
This project idea is offered in association with
Glasgow Community and Safety Services. Practical lessons
onboard its sail training yacht, Clyde Challenger, grab the
interest of young people and make learning relative to the working
world. The ex-round the world racing yacht gives pupils the
chance to engage directly with the natural world.
